There is an enormous range of features now available for software calendar packages.
But of course
not any package can offer a total sum of all available features within any given, single package. While each user requirement may differ and be somewhat unique, the following simply gives some of what is being offered by many of the
popular packages. (though not comprehensive)
Note that our web basd calendar (which is exactly that, and clearly not considered purchased 'software' ) -- obviously offers not all of the following features, it includes most of what we feel are important. So presented here as a courtesy to you, the site user, is a list of just some of the calendar features and functions on the software market today:

Is it intended for intranets or internets?
Should it be hosted locally (desktop) or on a remote server?
Basic type of calendrical system (Julian, Gregorian, etc)
Is it compatibility with your existing or planned browser/operating system
(will it be Windows Vista compatible if needed? -- support RSS feeds? )
Is the calendar javascript based and will you be enabling javascript through your browser?
Is softare compatible with wireless/palm devices or for desktop applications only?
(then too , Windows vs Mac)
With the newest technologies, has the software been fully tested (out of beta!).
Does the company rely primarily on customer feedback for final troubleshoot/debug procedures?
Support - what type of technical support is offered and the duration of it?
Is it intended for business or personal use?
Intended for use by groups or individuals or both?
(can weeks be numbered?)
Compatibility with what languages?
Compatible with personal organizers and address books?
An ability to to account for any differences in or for crossing time zones ?
Will it convert among the different calendar systems?
How are events entered, added to or modified and deleted when needed.
Is it simple and straighforward to use with little or no learning involved?
Manage contacts, appointments meetings, schedules and events?
What is the specific calendar style; grid vs list style and is it daily/monthly/yearly?
Are calendars printable from software?
Can you load customized wallpapers/backgrounds or personl photos.
Are moon phases available or as an option?
Downloads available for sports/holidays or other themed calendars?
