Ashura for the year 2009 is celebrated/ observed on sundown Tuesday, January 6th ending sundown of Wednesday, January 7th and also sundown Saturday, December 26th ending on sundown of Sunday, December 27th. Ashura which follows the moon cycle in the Islamic(Moon calendar - 354 days to 355 days) calendar is celebrated twice this Gregorian(Sun calendar - 365 days) calendar year.


Ashura falls on the 10th day of the 1st month of Muharram on the Islamic lunar calendar. For Shia Muslims the day commemorates the death of Husayn ibn Ali and for Sunni Muslims the day relates to when Moses and his followers fled Egypt and where saved by God separating the Red Sea.
