Maha Saptami is part of a 9-10 day Durga Puja festival. It is considered the holy day of the festival in the Aashin or Ashwina month (September/October) on the seventh day of the waxing phase of the moon in the Hindu calendar.
Both adults and children spend this time in fun and play. It is a time to really let their hair down and enjoy themselves. Government and businesses do remain open for this restricted holiday.
Maha Saptami's name comes from 'Maha" meaning great and 'Saptami' meaning seventh day.
